Don’t Be Another Stupid Poor Rapper
Becoming a successful rapper is not as easy as it may look on social media. There are a lot of moving parts that need to be smoothly working together in order for you to become successful (and not just popular). With that said, I think that most upcoming rappers make the process of becoming a successful rapper, a lot more complex and difficult than it needs to be.
Based on my observations, I believe it’s due to a lack of education from most upcoming artists, as well as a lack of available information surrounding the music industry in general.
Being a rapper is basically starting a business. If you wanted to start to any other business, I guarantee you wouldn’t start it without having a good idea on how to make it successful – but that’s what most aspiring rappers do.
So why are most upcoming hip hop artist starting their “business” without any idea on what they should be doing? Going into the studio, making a song, and then spamming people on Twitter will not make you successful! You need to study the game and learn how to be successful.
So, with hopes that you’re actually serious and understand that you can not become a successful music artist without learning how, I’m going to give you a few thousand dollars worth of information for FREE.
Create Good Music For Your Target Audience
I always say that marketing is more important than the music itself. You can make the best strip club song in the world, but if your target audience is mainly 14-17 year old girls, it probably won’t become successful.Your music needs to emotionally affect the person that’s listening to it. And NO, you don’t need to be the next Kendrick Lamaar or anything. Some music might give you confidence, while others might make you feel better after a relationship breakup.
Study your target audience. What fashion are they into, what problems do they have, what do they love to do, what makes them happy, etc.. The more you know about them, the better you can make your music.
A Rapper Who Makes Music For Everyone, Actually Makes Music For No One
To piggyback off of the first tip, find your audience and focus on only that audience. You want to become the #1 rapper for that audience. This will make expanding into other audiences so much easier, because you’ll have a pack of loyal and dedicated fans supporting your every move.DO NOT jump from audience to audience. This will hurt your brand and make becoming successful harder. If after a while, you feel that this audience is not a good audience for your goals. Rebrand yourself and music, then go after a different audience.
Goals Are Your Path To Success
To piggyback (again) off of the second tip, create some goals. Create a set of yearly, monthly, and weekly goals. For yearly goals, figure out what you would like to achieve this year.Would you like more fans or more money or more publicity, etc.. Pick 1 goal for the year. If you’re not a very popular artist, then your goal will usually revolve around getting more fans.
Then make monthly goals. What things should be done monthly in order for you to reach your yearly goals? If your yearly goal was to get more fans, your monthly goal could be to put out more content (songs, videos, blog post, more shows, etc..)
Lastly, make weekly goals. This is where the real magic happens. These goals will help you achieve your monthly goals. If your monthly goal was to put out more content, your weekly goals would be getting studio time, shooting a video, having a photoshoot, writing a blog for your website, etc..
If you stick to your weekly goals, you should achieve your monthly goals automatically. And if you achieve your monthly goals, you should achieve your yearly goals automatically. And by achieving your yearly goals, you should be exactly (or close to) where you want to be as a rapper.
Control Your Social Media
If you’re reading this, your social media is probably already out of control. You probably have a facebook page that hasn’t been updated in months and a twitter account with a ton useless tweets on it.But, don’t feel bad. I’ve done the same thing (more than once). It’s easy for your social media to get out of control. No worries though, I’ve got the solution for you.
You only need to use a few social media platforms. Whichever platforms you choose to use need to be able to work well with each other. They also need to be beneficial to your career. While platforms like Snapchat and Vine may be fun to use, the value that most rappers gain does not make a substantial difference.
My Recommendations for social media would be:
Twitter (for networking and communicating with fans) –>> Instagram (for branding and image) –>> Soundcloud (for uploading your songs and projects) –>> Youtube (for uploading your videos)
Network With Influential People
Networking will speed up your success. The opportunities that become available just by knowing someone are incredible. You can network with people at events, on twitter, via email, and more.Whenever you run into a problem, think WHO can help me solve this instead of WHAT can I do to solve it.
With that said, remember to always help them first before asking for something in return. It builds a relationship that will be much more beneficial to both of you in the long run.
Go Be A Successful Rapper
Like I said in the beginning, becoming a successful rapper isn’t easy. But, don’t make it harder than it needs to be. These tips will put you ahead of thousands of rappers who have no idea what they’re doing. It’s better to do a few things really well than to do a bunch of stuff badly. So focus and start making some progress before another rapper that’s focused comes by and replaces you.
