Prof. Adei wants govt to scrap LEAP
A former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Professional Administration (GIMPA) Professor Steven Adei has proposed that government swaps the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme with a universal pension scheme.
According to him, the current state of LEAP, is not fair to the elderly in the country.
He wants SSNIT to take the lead role in championing the universal pension scheme which will mandate all the aged to receive some monies for their up keep.
“I think that going forward SSNIT must dialogue with the government for us to introduce a universal pension so that everybody who gets 60-years should get a minimal pension”.
Professor Adei added that the Value Added Tax will be a good source to finance the scheme.
“When you have a universal pension it must be financed by the universal source and that is only possible in Ghana through the Valued Added Tax.”
